From 1730 onwards the lands that today belong to Avellaneda and Lanus were part of the "Pago y Curato de la Magdalena", and its jurisdiction incorporated the south coast of the Riachuelo river, plus the districts of Esteban Echeverría, San Vicente, Brandsen, Chascomús, Río Salado and Río de la Plata.
On request from the then judge of Quilmes, Don Martín José de la Serna, the area of Barracas was created on April 7th 1852, and it used to occupy what are currently the districts Avellaneda, Lanús (including Gerli), and Lomas de Zamora. By a decree passed by Doctor Valentin Alsina, minister of the Government of the Province of Buenos Aires, Barracas was considerably reduced in size in year 1861. That same year Lomas de Zamora was founded occupying lands from Barracas.
On March 30th, 1909, the request that Don Antonio Gerli had made to fraction the land requested was approved and the locality of Gerli is born.
The constant growth of Gerli, mostly around the Pavon Avenue, Gerli West, Gerli East, and Villa Aurora, was enough for the Commission for the Development of Gerli to make a request to the Municipality of Avellaneda to make the name Gerli official. Even though the request was not accepted the area was unofficially known as Gerli.
On September 29th, 1944, a federal interjector of the province created the area "4 de Junio" by means of the Decree Number 3321 on lands belonging to Lomas de Zamora, the locality of Remedios de Escalada, Villa Edén Argentino, part of Monte Chingolo, and splitting in half the area of Avellaneda which then included Gerli.
The name Gerli didn't become official until 1960. Gerli was declared city in 1975 with the approval of the Provincial law Number 8454.
