Valentín Alsina, together with Gerli, East Lanus, West Lanus, Monte Chingolo, Remedios de Escalada, Villa Caraza, Villa Diamante, Villa Obrera, and Barrio Santa Teresita, are part of the Lanus District.
Valentín Alsina is part of Lanús in Southern Greater Buenos Aires, 16 km away from the City of Buenos Aires.
Because it belongs to Lanus, Valentin Alsina is almost entirely integrated by lands of the la Matanza River's basin, and is situated along side the Riachuelo river.
Around 1850 Enrique Ochoa bought a plot of land along "Paso de Burgos" (Burgo's Passage) where he decided to build a bridge. The bridge didn't last long, and was destroyed by the water currents going beneath it. Another bridge was constructed, but it had the same fate. In 1859, a third bridge was constructed and given the name "Puente Alsina" (Alsina Bridge) in honor to Valentín Alsina, who was then the governor of the Province of Buenos Aires, and he helped getting the approval for the construction of the bridge.
In 1910 the Alsina bridge was replaced by a fourth bridge that stood until 1938, when the current "Puente Alsina" was constructed in the passage.
The town of Valentín Alsina, witnessed the battle between the Province of Buenos Aires and the rest of the Nation. The battle went through Villa de los Industriales up until the current Parque Patricios neighborhood in the City of Buenos Aires.
In 1880, the Governor of the Province Buenos Aires was Doctor Carlos Tejedor and the Governor for the rest of the Nation was Nicolas Avellaneda. In June of the same year the confrontation between the province and the nation began concerning the geographical location of the City of Buenos Aires and lasted for two days.
