Lanus is a district made up of the following areas: Gerli, Lanús Este, Lanús Oeste, Monte Chingolo, Remedios de Escalada, Valentín Alsina, Villa Caraza, Villa Diamante, Villa Obrera and Barrio Santa Teresita.
Lanus is located in Southern Greater Buenos Aires, 16 km away from the City of Buenos Aires.
On the lands that today form the Lanus District, tribes of Pampas and Uruguayan origin used to live.
Lanus was formed with real estate properties belonging to the heirs of a man named Don Juan Lanus. These properties were located between what today are the Hipólito Yrigoyen Avenue and the streets Basavilbaso and Caaguazú. Lanus has experienced and is still going through a great development, this drove for the need to acquire autonomy for Lanus.
On September 29th, 1944, the area named 4 de Junio was created and would later become what we today know as Lanus. Don Juan Piñeyro was the district's first Municipal Commissioner. In 1945 Remedios de Escalada, famous for its locomotive and wagon repair workshops, is incorporated to 4 de Junio and a year later the whole area was baptized by the name Lanus. In its origins Lanus was part of the "Pago de la Magdalena", of the "Pago de La Matanza " and also part of the "Pago del Riachuelo".
